Last year was the second year in a long time I spent the corporate smorgasbord of cheese that is Valentine’s Day by myself. Beyond all the bullshit that surrounds what is really just another day, I’m a sentimental man at heart and so I decided to mark it by making a mix for the person I wish I was spending the day with.
I gave it to her and left it at that. And then this weekend as I was putting ideas together for another valentine’s mix, I decided to dig out last year’s one and give it another listen. Turns out I quite like it and I think it came out nicely, especially considering it was put together rather hastily and because of some emotional turmoil.
The new mix I’m working on is a bit different, it’s themed around melancholy instead of lost/unobtainable love. That one should be done in a week or so and will be featured on another blog, though I’m not sure yet but will update when I do.
So anyways here goes. Valentine’s mix 2009 for those who want something to get close to the one they love but more realistically, considering the films I sampled for it, it’s probably more for those who haven’t got someone to celebrate it with or can’t be with the one they would like to be with. In which case I’m not responsible for any slightly depressing feelings the mix might bring up.
No tracklist, instead I’ll run down some of the featured artists: Mala (DMZ), The Roots, Sa-Ra, Cannibal Ox, J Dilla, Spacek, Slum Village, Pharcyde, Illa J, Erykah Badu, William Bell and a few others. Includes samples from the following movies: Chasing Amy, Clerks 2 and Mallrats. Dedicated to the person it was originally made for, I still think of you every day.
